Knee pain caused by osteoarthritis can vary a great deal from patient to patient. When pain starts to affect your quality of life, hyaluronan injections or viscosupplementation is a treatment option.
When osteoarthritis occurs in knees, the cartilage and joint fluid that protects the bones has deteriorated. This joint fluid is mainly made up of a substance called hyaluronic acid that works to lubricate and protect the joints. If the knee has decreased joint fluid, the bones can rub against each other which causes knee pain.
With the hyaluronan injection treatment, the knees receive lubrication and cushioning that leads to pain relief.
Hyaluronan knee injections require one office visit and most patients will feel relief from knee pain for six months.
Cortisone injections can be used to treat inflammation of the joint that is caused by bursitis, tendonitis or arthritis. The reduction in inflammation from the injection can last for a few months. Injections may be an option when an oral anti-inflammatory medication is no longer successful in reducing pain and/or inflammation.
